Christmas Eve!
Dec. 24th, 2005 09:41 pmWe've been having a fantastic time in Utah... got invited to Smörgåsbord at
tomte's family's house on Friday night and ate WAY too much food. Lots of traditional stuff, many different varieties of herring (including some homemade pickled herring that was just incredible) and homemade Bullar (also fantastic, and I managed to get the recipe!), among other things. And a whole houseful of people, which is something I love but still find quite foreign (as an only child who grew up in a military family (i.e. very rarely with any relatives around), I think I only had one Christmas with a crowd of family when I was growing up). We had an absolutely fantastic time!
Tonight
rackham cooked up his new favorite recipe, baked macaroni and cheese (a la Alton Brown), to go with the ham we brought with us (my dad is back to raising hogs as a hobby, which means readily available fresh pork, cured and prepared the way we like). It was almost more like eating a ham roast, if that makes any sort of sense. Between those two dishes, the ham gravy, the fresh fruit salad, the sparkling apple-lingonberry juice (a few bottles we'd held onto from the night before), it was another overly filling meal... and I'd made a trifle for dessert as I do every year -- I learned from a British friend about fifteen years ago and have been making it every Christmas ever since. She'd already made a few changes for American tastes... adding a bit of Jell-O, and for the LDS side of things, swapping the alcohol for strawberry or raspberry juice. The best part about tonight's trifle is that there's some left over for breakfast! Yay!!
I love coming down to my in-laws' for Christmas... I can't seem to get enough of the big family holiday celebrations (see above re: military and only-childness), plus they're all great people. They're not just family, they're also friends (quite literally, in some cases, since I knew Rackham's twin sister before I got to know him, and one of his younger sisters was good friend, as well). Tomorrow one niece and three nephews will be here, so I imagine we'll be having a rolicking time with new toys and lots of shredded wrapping paper!
Happy Christmas everyone!!
