Aug. 31st, 2005 11:28 pmWell, early tomorrow morning we're heading out for Dragon*Con and it looks like the fuel costs are gonna be nasty. I'm planning on not letting the fuel gauge get under half-full, since I hear they're having problems with fuel shortages in the Atlanta area (although
wisteria has assured me that it's nowhere near as bad as it looked on the news tonight!). I think I may still try working it so I won't need to fuel up at all while we're in the city.
On the plus side, I did something I NEVER do when I rented this car. You know how they ask if you'd like to purchase a tank of gas at a slight discount (per the gas price that day), and it's really only worthwhile if you're planning on bringing the car back almost completely empty. Well, this time on a whim, I said yes. So, I'm getting that tank of gas for $1.99 a gallon, and they're talking about it being around $4.00 a gallon by the end of the weekend. So, score one on the side of following wacky intuition.
I'm guessing there are likely to be some fundraisers at the convention and I wouldn't be surprised to find a blood drive. If I've done my calculations correctly, I should be able to donate blood on Friday or Saturday (depending on whether the 56th day counts as a day you can't donate or a day you can) and I'm planning on doing it, even if I have to drive around to find a donation spot. I've heard that blood banks have definitely been running short... they've lost the stores they had in the affected areas and are now running low in other areas as blood is transfered there. And it's something concrete and immediate I can do to help -- I know that other things are probably more helpful, but this should at least help with the feelings of frustration for not being able to do something more direct.
Getting really excited about the convention, meeting so many of my LJ friends, and seeing
rosiewook again (and I'm very grateful that she's letting us crash at her place for the weekend!)
