Awful, horrible, no-good month
Feb. 19th, 2005 12:52 pmFebruary is the Month From Hell. Literally. It seems like something horrible has happened to everyone I know, and it doesn't seem to be letting up. Thank heavens it's not a leap year, I don't think we need any more days of this than we're already getting.
As several of you already know, our cat is dying. We've had Cymry (she's the Siamese in the icon I'm using) for nearly 16 years and already nursed her through one bout of kidney failure five years ago, but this time she isn't pulling through. She was at the vet's office for most of this week, while they tried to turn things around, but yesterday we just decided it wasn't working and being kept at the vet's office was pretty pointless and unnecessarily stressful for her, so we brought her home -- with all the materials we'd need to keep her going, and instructions on how to use them (we've been giving her fluid, subcutaneously, as well as injections of pain medication).
We picked up a Kitty Hot Water Bottle for her yesterday (technically, it's got some other sort of liquid in it... stick it in the microwave for two minutes and it stays warm for hours), that she seems to really like. She's curled up on it right now, in fact, and if you catch her at an angle where you can't see her dry nose or the shaved bits on her legs from the IVs, she looks like she should be fine.
Every once in awhile, she gets up and wobbles around, as if she's looking for something... she'll find another place to lay down, make a small, satisfied noise and try to sleep there for a bit, before repeating the process (until we pick her up, pet her for a bit, and put her back with the hot water bottle). Near as we can tell, she's looking for her version of the Door into Summer. Somewhere, there's a spot where she'll be comfortable, if she can just find it...
We've got an appointment later today to have her put to sleep... she's just been getting worse and I don't think we're doing her any favors by prolonging things. We're certainly not doing ourselves any favors... we're both absolute wrecks.
