In Utah

We made it to my in-laws' place in Utah without incident. Yay!

And how utterly wrong is it that when we got here it was warmer than back home, the roads were clearer and there was less snow. Bizarre!

The roads weren't completely horrid on the way down, although there were certainly stretches that we could have done without (compact snow and ice on the road in several places and high winds through my least favorite part of Idaho (the same general vicinity where we were blown off the road in a snow storm three years ago)).

Despite the fact that we stayed at the same hotel last night, [livejournal.com profile] tomte and [livejournal.com profile] gidgiddoni remained about 90 minutes ahead of us today. This worked out well... since they were willing to give us live, on-the-spot weather and road condition reports. And we have constant internet access with our phones, so we were able to let them know what we learned from the various DOT websites about upcoming road conditions.

And now Eight Days of Happiness: Day Five --

My happy thing for the day: Pickled herring!!!

Despite being really late, due to the weather and road conditions, we managed to get to Tomte's mom's house in time for the end of the annual Smörgåsbord, and there was still plenty of her pickled herring left!! YUM!! It's one of my favorite traditions this time of year.

Of course, the whole event is a great source of happiness... there were still quite a few people left when we arrived, and considering this is pretty much the one time of year we get to see them, I was very glad we hadn't missed them. It's so funny because I actually know Tomte's cousins better than I know my own. I certainly see them more regularly. There was much lovely Swedish food to be had... including the aforementioned pickled herring, some other types of fish, some swedish meatballs, bular (which is sinfully delicious), and tons of other stuff... some of which have names I'm not entirely sure how to spell.

Hee! My Mom used to buy that for my Dad at the holidays but she made him eat it in the basement 'cause she couldn't stand the smell.

For some odd reason, our family has never made Janssons frestelse as part of our Christmas smörgåsbord blowouts. No particular reason why. Perhaps I'll look into making it one of these years.

No lutefisk, either, but there's a very good reason for that! Yech.
