Great Big Sea with Carbon Leaf
Just got back from the Great Big Sea concert... and yeah, I'm just a bit deaf. :-p
The opening act was Carbon Leaf... a bit of an odd experience for me, as this was the first time I'd gone to concert being opened by a group I'd never heard of before, but actually wound up liking (don't get me started on the atrocious group that opened for Billy Idol last year). The guys in Carbon Leaf were incredibly talented, had a good stage presence, and decent music... but they still didn't grab me. We did pick up one of their CDs from the lobby, and I plan on adding them into my MP3 rotation, so they may grow on me even more, but I don't think I'd go to a concert just to see them.
The other thing that seemed odd was the size of the crowd, the place was absolutely packed. I know, it shouldn't have surprised me... but we only just discovered Great Big Sea last year, pretty much by accident.
rackham was browsing MP3.com (back before they were bought out and started to *SUCK*) for new artists and stumbled across a few of their songs. After downloading and listening, he tracked down some filesharing IRC channels and snagged a few of their albums. We both got hooked and bought two albums off Amazon (and we picked up another two tonight). Just due to the way we discovered the group, I have a tendency to think they're not well-known, which is quite definitely not the case. How do you find groups like this nowadays other than the way we did, anyway? I can't imagine they get much radio play, or if they do, I wouldn't have a clue which stations are playing them.
Great Big Sea puts on a fantastic show... tonight was the last night of their tour, and the birthday of one of the band members, so things got a tad silly on stage (and in the audience). Oh, and speaking of the audience... just judging by crowd reactions, I'd say 1/3 to 1/2 *had* to have come down from British Columbia. It was Canadian Pride Night at the Moore Theatre. :-)
The one complaint I had was that the sound mixer guy needed to be taken out and flogged. The balance for Carbon Leaf was perfect, but he'd apparently done some changes before Great Big Sea took the stage, and cranked the instruments up WAY too loud. The instrumentation was so loud it bordered on distorted and there were times when we couldn't hear the vocals at all, even with the singers practically eating the microphones (highly disappointing when they were playing "Mari-Mac" since the vocals are kinda the whole point of that song). And when they weren't playing and just talking to the crowd, or were performing a softer song, there was a huge buzz from the speakers. Not an impressive job from the sound guy.
Still, it was fun, loud, hot, crowded, and energetic... everything I love about concerts, and I'm seriously considering getting tickets for their show up in Vancouver in June.

*sigh*
Otherwise, I really wanted to go.
Glad you had a good time, in spite of the stupid mixer guy.
