James Marsters! Eeeeeee!!!

Just got back from the Buffyverse Q&A... It was an odd mix of actors, but still a lot of fun: James Marsters, Juliet Landau, Elizabeth Rohm and the guy who played the Chaos Demon (I never did catch his name). Most of the questions were aimed at JM, though people did seem to make an effort to include everyone. I'm wishing I'd taken notes, because I really suck at remember specifics... As usual, though, JM and JL were a delight to watch... and ER was really fun, too, after she started feeling a little more at ease with the setup.

Right off the bat, lots of questions about Torchwood, which JM did his best to not really answer -- makes sense, though, since he has no idea what info has been released about his appearance on the show. A few sly comments, lost of hand gestures... pretty much what you'd expect. Did I mention he's a delight to watch? He always looks like he's having the time of his life.

Oh, and apparently he wrecked up his knee while filming TW (I think I even remember reading about that) and is supposed to be using a cane, but left it off-stage. This came up when someone asked if JM and JL would mind doing some dance steps (because they both have a background in dance).

JM did let slip that he might be appearing on Smallville again, during the question about what projects they were all working on currently. And he and ER discussed how different it was going from a show like AtS to a procedural drama. Not nearly as fun, apparently!

There was the story about JM's first day filming BtVS, when Joss came up to him and started in with "You actors, with your pretty faces and your pretty hair and your pretty clothes... you just get all the girls " (or something along those lines), with JM saying "You dyed my hair and gave me my clothes" and Joss replying "Yeah, but you have those cheekbones. You're always going to get laid." JM said he had no idea what that was all about... I thought it was kind of interesting, though.

Oh! And he did the southern accent he used as the alternate Spike accent... I can see why they didn't go with it, but it was really quite good (nmissi has asked him about it in an autograph line years ago and said that it was fantastic, and now I can see why! Totally wouldn't have worked for Spike, though. Especially not with Dru).

Let's see, the only other tidbit I remember right off-hand is that JM and ER apparently met when they auditioned together for roles in a show... she got the part and he didn't. Another interesting thing that I hadn't known before was that DB was cast in Bones before Emily Deschanel, because he tried to get Elizabeth Rohm into the role (she was discussing it in terms of her one of her worst acting moments, ever... she apparently sucked at the audition and DB helped her get a crew together and they did a separate audition tape for her).

Gah! I have a brain like a sieve. Because I've already forgotten so many specifics. Hopefully other people will be better at this than I am... I know a number of LJ folks were going to be there, and I sort of kept an eye out for them, but really... how do you find people you have never seen before and have no clue what they look like in a packed room in dim light? I tried glancing at a few badges, but finally just gave up.

And, alas, no photos... I had a pretty decent seat, but the room was fairly dark and my camera is not nearly good enough to pull good pictures out of that sort of situation. But there were lots of cameras flashing all over the place, so I'm sure some will end up online eventually!

he's always getting hurt, he seems very accdent prone as me and my other friend say, poor dear but oh hmm er as bones, to me. shes a good actress for angel and on that other show i can't remember but, i don't see her as bones, nor do i see spike being southern...creepy.

Thanks for the report! Poor boy, getting injured again...I hope it's not giving him too much trouble. And SMV again, eh? Well, Brainiac definitely left in a way that he could come back... I would have liked to hear the Southern accent! :)

OMG, I'm so glad Rohm didn't get the Temperance role on Bones. She sucked on L&O and she would have sucked on Bones. Thank God the producers weren't stupid, but what is up with DB? I guess he wanted a proven lousy actress to play opposite him. Emily Deschanel was probably too good for him, even though she's only sort of a middling actress.

And as for Joss's statement about how "you actors always get the girls" -- talk about sour grapes! I always knew his dismissive attitude toward JM/Spike had to do with basic jealousy and envy, because at his core JM is just as much a geek as Whedon, but his wrapping is so much more attractive that it doesn't matter. It's also very clear why Whedon was so in love with big stupid beefy types like DB and Marc Blucas - he wanted to BE them. And to him Nathan Fillion must be the godliest of gods: handsome, strapping AND clever. Heh. Sorry you're such a little homonculous, Joss, but don't take it out on the pretty boys. It's not their fault.

According to what I've read, JM is joining "Without a Trace" in a recurring role and The character is described on the actor's site as an "attractive in a real way, a bright full-of-life personality, charming, possibly from around the Washington DC area, so could have a slight southern accent so maybe we'll get to hear his take on a southern accent after all.

He talked a little bit about WaT, but mostly in response to the question about the differences between filming a fantasy show and a more realistic one. As for the accent, odds are it would be different... since the one he used is a bit more of old-timey southern gentleman. But it was still hot! ;-)

I rewatched Buffy Vs. Dracula the other day and it was really stunning to me how much Marc Blucas looked like DB in part of it. And, hell, I always thought that MB and NF looked like they were two peas in a pod. It's so very clear what Joss thinks a hero should look like.

Hi there, I was at that panel and I think you got everything. I was sititng on the far right hand side of the room in the second row and I saw James walk in with his handlers and he was using the cane. I have a few pictures up at my journal if you want to check it out.

I went to the panels on Saturday and Sunday as well.

I had so much fun and I agree with what you said that James always seems like he is having the time of his life. :)

Ken Feinberg.

He was a really nice person. Magie and I got autographs on items from him (me in the Bite Me entry on Fool for Love) and we walked away. His assistant came running over to us in the autograph area and told us to come back because Ken wanted to give us each a headshot. That has NEVER happened to me before.

He's my very favourite Chaos Demon now.

David was cast before Emily. Might I suggest he was being a friend to a former co-worker. Maybe he enjoyed working with Elizabeth and wanted to try it again? Maybe he knew she was looking for a job, as most actors usually are, and just tried to help her out? I'm sorry it didn't work out for her, but I love Emily. She and David have great chemistry together, in my opinion, so everything worked out for the best. I think Bones is a wonderful show thanks to the great ensemble cast.

Also, I don't consider him a big stupid beefy type at all. I've met him, and he's actually rather tall, slender, well-built, and extremely handsome. Oh, and he's nice, friendly, articulate, and funny. He's not doing too bad for himself either. He performed in the Spalding Gray play this summer in New York and got some nice reviews.

I just don't see where you connect stupid with David.

Oh yes, and before you peg me a James Marsters hater, I'm not. I'm a huge fan. I've been to see him at cons and concerts close to twenty times. I happen to be a huge fan of both men. I just get tired of people putting David down. Sure, you have a right to post your comment, but since you posted it publicly, I'm replying.

Why does a con report on James Marsters have to turn into a rip into David Boreanaz comment?
