fenchurch: (LOTRO)

Lord of the Rings Online owns my soul. Or, at least, all my computer time lately. I think it's a reaction to not having been able to play for almost a month. I did okay right after getting home, but in the last week or so, it's been sucking me in, big time. I managed to start pulling myself away in the last day or so, though... I just have to keep up the mantra: it's a hobby, not a life. ;-)

That said... Turbine has really been living up to my expectations with this game. Asheron's Call was a lot of fun for its dynamic content (among other things)... they were always having special events in game and, occasionally, live events (with AC devs playing the role of bad guys). Even with some of the glitches, the summer festival events in LOTRO have been a blast... the only thing I haven't done with any of my characters is to successfully complete the Chicken Game (it kept breaking every time I was in a match). And it only took three matches for me to figure out exactly how it was played (I'd somehow completely missed the goalposts at either end of the field, and thought we were supposed to be hitting the chicken into one of the baskets on the side *headdesk*). Some folks in my Kinship are thinking of trying a game some time soon, where we can all be in a Fellow with voice chat, to help coordinate gameplay (as much as we can, anyway). Hopefully that'll help.

Old jokes can find new places... seen in the OOC (out of character) channel near Bree on Landroval yesterday:
Random Person 1: 'how does one get to the ettenmores?'
Random Person 2 (replying immediately): 'Practice!'

Something that's been bugging me, although I suspect no one knows the answer... how the heck did a picture with some funny text on it become known as a "macro"?!?!? Even though I don't like it, I can at least squint and look at it sideways and see how the word "meme" became warped to mean a quiz type thing on LJ. But macro? In computer terms, it's essentially a series of commands that have been strung together to be run using a single command. I used to write them all the time to help with repetitive changes in my code, back in the day. I have no clue how it could have morphed into the current usage.

A few days ago, I ran across a story about a wonderful new anti-speeding campaign in Australia... the commercial is hysterical and I'm a bit sad that there's no way they'd run something like this in the US. Take a look, if you haven't already seen it (the link goes to a MySpace page): Speeding. No one thinks big of you. It reminds me of a billboard ad we saw when we were in Melbourne a few years ago that still cracks me up just to think about... it was for a local women's health club and the tagline was "No Toms, No Harrys, And No Dicks." I really wish I'd been faster on the draw with my camera. ETA: I found a pic of a SmartCar with the ad slogan on it over on Flickr

Oh, and you know what I love? When idiots choose the wrong person to try to rob. Everyone's probably already seen this story, but I figured I'd share the link anyway: Ex-Marine, 72, Fights Off Pickpocket. The article goes on to mention one other rather important fact, that he was also an accomplished Golden Gloves boxer. Hee!
