Saturday morning catch-up
Jun. 23rd, 2007 10:31 amNot surprisingly, I continue to suck at updating my LJ... the weird thing is that I could have sworn I'd posted something at least twice since the last time. I guess it's just one of the hazards of roadtrips... I think quite a bit about what I want to say while I'm on the road, and then never get around to actually posting it when I finally get out of the car.
Thanks for all the birthday wishes earlier this week! I tried to get around to reply to everyone who posted about it, but I suspect I missed a few along the way. And a big thank you to
slm76 for the card and to
wildrider and
rahirah for the DVDs! (Whee!! I finally have a good copy of "The Blob"!) It was a fun birthday, although relatively low-key. No big parties, no overnight trips out of town (ha! Like I need anymore of those).
My mom called the day before and asked if we'd mind a visitor for my birthday... then drove up from La Grande, OR that night (which forced me to actually clean out the guest room... something I've been saying I needed to do for a few months). My mom and I ended up bopping all around the area on my birthday... lunch up in Woodinville at Racha (my favorite Thai place) then over to Seattle to visit Viewlands Elementary, which is where my mom attended Kindergarten and first grade -- she'd seen a piece on Northwest Cable News about it being closed down and she wanted to stop by. I can see why it was on the chopping block: old and clunky building style that doesn't suit the region very well (with no way to update it... they'd have to tear it down and rebuild like they did a similar school down the road from us) and the real reason for dropping it: not very many kids. In fact, we'd wandered around for a bit before we realized school was still in session (we both assumed the few kids we saw around were there for summer programs). It turns out there'd been a ceremony/event the week before, where a bunch of alumni and local celebrities were on hand. The school secretary had my mom sign the big scrollwork mural (already covered with the signatures of other alums) and gave her a copy of the program from the event... and my mom bought one of the commemorative t-shirts, while I ordered one of the cookbooks (with money going to fund summer programs at the school).
Later that night my mom,
rackham and I met up with
gidgiddoni,
tomte (and their niece, V),
mekle and
textualdeviance for dinner at Todai, where I ate way too much sushi and not nearly enough Crème Brulée. I'll be trying my hand at making the latter, myself, before too long... for my birthday, Rackham bought me some ramekins to go with the kitchen torch he gave me awhile back (he also gave me Season 3 of "Pinky and the Brain" on DVD). I got some books from Gid and Tomte (yay! More Heinlein!) and some really spiffy handmade artwork from their niece.
I finally paid for a membership at Dragon*Con this week, so I'm definitely going... I even picked up a ticket to the James Marsters concert that same weekend. Is anyone else going? Now I just need to work on getting a plane ticket and I'll be set! Since I want to also visit
nmissi on this trip, I have several options on where to fly into (Atlanta, Nashville or Louisville) and it's looking like Louisville may end up being cheapest. Not what I would have expected!
