Fun and recuperation

I can't believe how tired I was after the convention ended... the first night in Redlands it was a struggle to stay awake until 10:00 (and I really didn't want to go to sleep earlier or my sleep schedule would get all messed up). I called [livejournal.com profile] rackham right before heading to bed, since we'd been playing phone tag for several days and I really wanted to hear his voice, but I was so tired I was apparently just barely coherent. When I woke up in the morning I couldn't remember what we'd talked about. (I also had the strangest nightmare that night, that woke me up around 4:30. I think it must have been a side effect of exhaustion and a bit of stress release, because aside from last year for the first little while after the car accident, I NEVER have nightmares. Very weird.) My sister-in-law and her family have a "guest room" of sorts, in that they've put a futon out in a screened-in porch. Absolutely wonderful this time of year, since it actually gets a bit chilly out there, compared to inside the house, so it's much easier for those of us from cooler climes to actually sleep!

Rackham arrived on Wednesday... it had been nearly two weeks since I'd last seen him. Way too long! We had fun bopping around Redlands on Thursday, then on Friday we went with his twin sister and her two-year-old daughter down to the San Diego Zoo. What fun!! I hadn't been there since I was four years old, but the one thing I remembered from the Zoo was still there...

Yes, that's right... a moving sidewalk. There are actually two and they're pretty steep, taking you up to a bunch of aviaries (which I also vividly remembered). Funny what sticks in your brain... and it just goes to show that I was a bit of a geek even as a very young child, because the best thing about the zoo was the futuristic moving sidewalk.

For the most part, we just followed the toddler on her exploration of the zoo, which was a great way to do it. She had a grand time and we got to see a ton of stuff. And what a beautiful park!

Today we rearranged the luggage, packed up the car and headed northeast to Las Vegas.. which is a lot less exciting than it sounds. It's unbelievably hot here... well over 100F (I can't believe my mom used to live in these temperatures and loved it), but the hotel room is nicely air conditioned. We didn't bother trying to stay down on the Strip on a weekend, it's way too expensive... so we found a really nice, new hotel out near Nellis AFB in North Las Vegas that was MUCH cheaper and nicer and came with free wi-fi. Plus it's not like we're far from anything... the drive back to the Rio for dinner took about ten minutes. The buffet there was just as wonderful as we remembered and we beat the crowds by about an hour.

We also took a few minutes to run into the local Wal-mart for sunscreen and to hunt for kick-around sandals for me. I didn't even bother with the women's section, since shoe manufacturers seem to firmly believe that all women have dainty narrow feet and I, well... don't. But surprisingly, I found a really comfortable pair in the men's section right away that weren't too expensive, so we could afford to buy the two pair I need. Yes, I have freaky feet... that are two very different sizes. The downside to new shoes is that I've already got some blisters from wearing them (because I'm really not used to walking around with things strapped to my feet), but the extra shoes are all boxed up and ready to mail off to the Odd Shoe Exchange, who will either find my exact opposite or will give the shoes to people with only one foot. I'm so glad I found those guys, because I hated throwing away perfectly usable pairs of odd shoes.

Tomorrow we continue on northeast into Utah... hopefully stopping in a few places to enjoy the sights, assuming it isn't too hot to survive walking around.

You sound like you're having a wonderful time! The odd shoe exchange is a wonderful idea! I'm going to see if they have a similar idea her in the UK because I have a friend with the same problem...

Hopefully they do! It's been wonderful for me, because I'm now a lot more likely to actually buy shoes, knowing I'm not completely wasting a pair of them.

Now that is just... neat.

BandAid blister cushions! They're a special sort of bandaid just for blisters, and they are wonderful.

Thanks! I'll have to look for those. The blisters are just teeny tiny at the moment, and I'm thinking I may just try wearing some socks with the sandals to see if that helps cushion things a little.

You were at the SD Zoo? Did you see KOALAS?

[identity profile] fenchurche.livejournal.com 2007-06-03 02:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh! Yep! Although I've gotta tell you... it's a bit anticlimactic after having seen them up close out in the wild.

Wow!!! You went to the San Diego Zoo! I heard that's the best zoo... :o)

Hope you have fun in Vegas...despite the heat!

It was pretty incredible... they had a few animals I'd never seen before, and they've got a few different things that are actually extinct in the wild (including a herd of a type of deer or antelope from Russia that's the largest breeding group in the world). Next time we're down that way we're planning on checking out the Wild Animal Park, which has even more animals... living a lot closer to the way they do in the wild.

You know I think that I would have remembered that, too.

I love zoos in general, but that moving sidewalk must have been quite soething for a small child of the 70s or 80s.

And what a good idea the Odd Shoe Exchange is.

Hah -- the thing that made the biggest impression on me as a kid was a python in the snake house. Eeek! It was almost as big as me (I think I was seven at the time).

But the moving sidewalks are impressive, too. ;)
