What are your top five sodas?

This is a bit tricky, since I'm not much of a soda drinker. But, here goes...

1) Lemon squash -- Is anyone really surprised by this answer? I only raved about it constantly after our trip to Australia. For a bit of background: when I was a kid, Canada Dry test marketed a soda called Wallaby Squash in parts of California... my Aunt (the same one who just had neck surgery, actually) got me hooked on the stuff when we were visiting my grandparents. My great-grandmother used to ship six packs of Wallaby Squash to me wherever we happened to be living... until they stopped making it around 1981. I kept looking for something that tasted similar, with no luck until we visited Australia a few years ago and I discovered that Wallaby Squash was actually lemon squash... a drink available EVERYWHERE in Australia. I now mail-order it off the internet for a treat (importing it is way too pricy to drink on a regular basis).

2) Dad's Root Beer (in the glass bottles) -- Harder to find around here now that Larry's Market has closed... Dad's Root Beer does a special version of their product in glass bottles using their old sugar only recipe. Yum!!!

3) Passiona -- Passionfruit flavored soda! What's not to love!!

4) Bundaberg Ginger Beer -- Mmmm... Ginger Beer. Actually, I like a number of brands of ginger beer... but Bundaberg is my favorite, followed closely by Cock & Bull.

5) Mountain Dew -- My caffeinated beverage of choice. I only indulge in it every few weeks or so, usually when I'm trying to kick some lung issues (impending bronchitis, asthma attacks, etc.) or if I'm on a roadtrip and need the boost to stay awake. The only soda I'll drink that has high fructose corn syrup, but because of that I really have to be in the mood for it.

We have Dad's in bottles here at the Thriftway near my house. If you wanted to get together, I could pick up some for you. In fact, I just had one last night. They also have pops from that same company bottling all the old, good pops -- BubbleUp, Quench, Moxie, Moxie Cream Soda, etc.

My favorite pop ever was something called Simba. It was not unlike Squirt or a sweeter Fresca (and I loved the Fresca and Tab made when I was a kid, when they used cyclamates, which were a wonderful sweetener and it was stupid that they took them off the market), but no one I know remembers it.

You already know my favorite soda (http://www.applebeer.com). But do you know my Top 5?

Hmmm... don't know that I could get five, but I could make some guesses about a few of them.

Orangina
um... kiwi italian soda?

Other than that, I got nothing.

Oh! I never thought about checking Thriftway! I believe there's one just across the street from PCC Market in Kirkland... which is closer than going to the Larry's in Redmond (since I'm not even sure they carry the stuff).

I'm actually in no danger of running out any time soon... I hit the big sale when the Kirkland and Bellevue Larry's Markets went out of business and bought all their remaining stock of Dad's Root Beer. Since I generally only indulge in the stuff every few weeks or so, it's been lasting a long time.

They also have pops from that same company bottling all the old, good pops -- BubbleUp, Quench, Moxie, Moxie Cream Soda, etc.

Oh, yeah... probably from the same supplier that Larry's used. I used to pick up a BubbleUp from time to time, as well, for nostalgia's sake.

My favorite pop ever was something called Simba.

I don't think I ever ran across that one, though it sounds good.

What does Mountain Dew taste like? I assume it's distinctive because Spike recognises it instantly, but I've never encountered it here in the deprived English Midlands!

You might try galcos.com for the Dad's Root Beer. The store is almost around the corner from where I live, and they have, I swear, eleventy-billion brands of soda. They might even have a version of your lemon squash. Worth a try.

Whoops, didn't read your comment about your Dad's stash. Still, if local stores are exhausted, Galco's is always a good source, as they ship.

OK. In no particular order after #2:

1. Apple Beer
2. Walkabout Springs Kiwi Soda (no longer made... *sniff*)
3. Orangina
4. Root beer (Frostop and Henry Weinhard's are two favorites)
5. Pineapple soda (Shasta makes a good one, as does Jarritos)

What I wouldn't do for a bottle of Walkabout Springs again. *sigh*

I Think the ballard market carries dad's in bottles if not you can pick it up from real soda in Fremont. (that's where it all originates in the seattle area) Or if you want I can call in an order I have an in with the boss there :).

Mt Dew.... it's like the nectar of the gods only it tastes better.

Heh Really it's a sweet citrus drink with an orange/grapefruit flavor and the slight bitter aftertaste of caffeine.

The last bit is why it's so popular when it was first marketed as Kickapoo Joy Juice (which you can still find) it flopped as just another fruit punch. So the bright boys at the botteling plant re tooled it as Mt Dew and dumped in a whole lot of caffeine and suddenly it started to sell. For a long time it was the soda with the most caffeine, Then came Jolt and ninety bazillion energy drinks.

Right now I think it's either #3 or 4 in nationwide soda sales.

Lemon squash sounds so interesting. I'd be willing to give it a try based upon your recommendation. :)

My favorite soda is plain and simple. Mr. Pibb. I can have it every day. It's certainly better for me if I don't. :)

Sprecher Root Beer (Sprecher = local Milwaukee brewery)
Sprecher Ginger Ale
Black Cherry soda

Those are my favorites. I used to love Dad's root beer, but haven't seen it in years.
