Sadly, nothing new to report... we're one of the 500,000 PSE households still without power. Supposedly, once they get the main line fixed (the one coming over the mountains from Grand Coulee Dam), the power should go up very quickly for most of us, with some scattered areas having very localized problems (it's tough for them to figure out where they have blown transformers until they've got the main grid back up and running).

It got pretty cold in the house last night... down to 49 when we woke up this morning. Rackham got the fire going about 6:00 and we're up to 55 now, in the living room. Not balmy and not exactly comfortable, but at least it's livable.

I'm helping to throw a baby shower today for a friend who just adopted a baby boy... they currently have no power, we have no power and the other friend who is co-hosting the party also has no power... but the co-host's in-laws have pretty much never lost electricity (they live near BellSquare Mall). So, last minute, we're moving things there. The CostCo up in Woodinville where I ordered the cake is, thankfully, up and running today... we're also going to see if they have any D cell batteries. We normally keep a brick of them on hand, but apparently forget to replace them when we ran out. It's not a been a problem yet, since we only need them in the one lantern, but I want to have some on hand in case this goes on much longer.

The other really cool thing is that my friend's in-laws have told us to bring our laptops, PDAs, cellphones and whatever else along with us to charge them up while we're there for the baby shower. Yay!!! We're also planning to bring those small rechargeable lanterns, even though they seem to still be going strong. We're going to call them before we head over to see if we can maybe do some laundry as well. We were caught up with nearly everything before the power went out, except for towels... and we're rapidly running out.

Hot showers have been the best... maybe even better than the hot fire. We moved the bathroom books out of the room (so they wouldn't get soggy), then we just could light some candles, shut the door and let the room fill up with steam. Bliss!

Here's to hoping you come back on when most everyone else does. If I were in your shoes I'd even settle for the dinky little generator I saw at big lots a few weeks ago. They have some on Amazon pretty cheap... I know when we have a big outage here they can sell out locally very fast...

(Waves) Sorry you're still without power; I was trying to devise a way to keep my orchids alive when ours came back on yesterday afternoon. We're on the part of the PSA grid that gets power from LaGrande and from the Centralia steam plant, but even so there's a lot of people around Olympia without power because of downed trees.

Hooray for the recharging party! I'm glad, for once, that we kept our land-lines and AOL dial-up, and am convinced, after a night with cranky college students deprived of SciFi Friday, that satellite might be a good idea after all.

Julia, glad to have only such trivialities to worry about, and still looking for a safe heat source for stormy weather

Glad you guys are doing alright, even if it's gotten a bit chilly. And that's great news on the baby shower. It's great that you've been able to rearrange it. Take care. :)

Weirdly, none of this has hit the news over here. We have some major news items ongoing currently, including a serial murderer, but you'd have thought there would have been a mention! I had to hunt on the BBC news website to find anything at all.

Sorry you're both going through this, though you do at least seem impressively well-prepared. I hope you have power back soon!

Last night I finally saw some of your neck of the woods on TV - and a house with exactly what you were worried about: a tree slicing it clean in half! I'm so glad you guys are still safe and keeping warm!

Thank God for in-laws :) even if they're not yours!

You sound as though you've got things more or less under control. Good for you! And I really hope your power comes back soon.

Wow. A baby shower when no one has any power - now, that's dedication.

Consider me impressed.

I hope y'all get power again soon.
